This web page was conceived as part of a retrospective initiative on my part to digitize a sampling of artwork and graphics I had created over a period of several decades, supplementing my career as a B.C. high school art teacher. In time after my retirement, this web page also became a landing page for other web pages, not unlike a simple website, to accommodate my other acquired personal interests in West Kootenay-Boundary local histories, and my research into my ancestral Doukhobor heritage. With exposure to cartography, a component of my earlier studies at UBC, I have also since then maintained an interest in map-making, incorporating a number of specialized maps on these web pages. Embracing digital photography and computer technologies in the 1980s, I have now been casually exploring the potential use of artificial intelligence in my historical research.

AI-assisted Russian language translations ...

Google claims (in 2025) to have digitized over 40 million books and made them available as a searchable online archive in their Google Play Books store. 10 million of these are said to be free to download and read. I've had several such books in my collection in the Russian language for some time, including a number by 19th century Russian Orthodox theological scholars, O. Novitsky and F.V. Livanov. Not easily read in their native language, I chose a number of their writings on the early Russian origins of the Doukhobors, to test the capability of the recently released (January 2025) Chinese DeepSeek R1 "artificially intelligent" chatbot to translate them into English.
